Fire/Hazard ResponsesJust under a quarter of all "Fire/Hazard" responses were structure fires. One out of five responses in this category were "9-1-1 Hang-up Calls." On a 9-1-1 hang-up, we don't know what the problem is or even if there is a problem. To be safe, the 9-1-1 center dispatches Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement to all 9-1-1 hang-up calls where the caller cannot be re-contacted. If the caller can be re-contacted, Law Enforcement is sent to make sure everything is really okay. One of the structure fires we responded to in 1999 began as a 9-1-1 hang-up. The caller couldn't stay on the line because of the fire but was able to pick up the phone and dial 9-1-1 on the way out of the house. Because of the enhanced 9-1-1 system in Jasper County, the dispatcher had the address and telephone number pop up on the screen as she answered the call. When she couldn't make contact by calling the number back, she followed the "Hang-up Protocol" and dispatched Fire, EMS, and Police to the address. Fire arrived in time to contain the fire damage to a single room. There were no injuries. Enhanced 9-1-1 works! 9-1-1 hang-up calls to "test 9-1-1" waste emergency resources, tying up emergency personnel when they may needed elsewhere. Medical/Trauma ResponsesThe most common medical (illness) call we responded to was "Shortness of Breath," accounting for about 1 out of 4 medical calls and 8.55% of all responses. Just under half (45%) of the Trauma calls we responded to were motor vehicle accidents. Traumatic injuries from car crashes were over 300% more numerous than the next most common cause of trauma (Falls). These frightening statistics highlight the need for fastened safety belts and good child restraint seats!
